Where do we get our marching orders? John 5:19-20

Bible Bites 4 Teens Posted on March 16, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 15, 2014

file00029120246 Jesus (300)Jesus explained to the religious leaders that he didn’t act on his own, but that he did only what he sees God, his heavenly do.

What a perfect example for us to follow. We are so prone to act on every idea that seems right to us without first praying about it. Sadly, even when we do pray, we tend to ask God to bless our plans instead of asking God what his plans are for us. If Jesus needed to spend time talking to God about how he should proceed, how much more should we do the same?

John 5:19-20

New Living Translation (NLT)

19 So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.

Making adjustments in my writing schedule?

Bible Bites 4 Teens Posted on March 15, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 15, 2014

7752233_sI have been experimenting with different approaches to blogging on Bible Bites 4 Teens and on His Whisperings. For the past two weeks I have posted on Bible Bites 4 Teens from the Gospels following a scripture readings plan for Lent. Some of these scriptures I have also recorded.

I hope to maintain this schedule, but I fear I may have bitten off more than I can chew, especially considering that over the next 2-3 weeks I will prepare to attend one of the Highlights Foundation Workshops – Sharing Our Hope: Writing for Religious and Inspirational Markets. One thing I hope to gain from attending this workshop is a better plan for prioritizing my writing efforts and focusing on the most appropriate and realistic ministries for my talents, skills, and interests. I also hope to hone my skills in writing for teens.

I will appreciate your prayers over the next few weeks as I seek God’s leading in my writing plans.

Jesus and the Sabbath – Mark 2:23-3:6

Bible Bites 4 Teens Posted on March 15, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 15, 2014

Pharisees pointing at Jesus disciples who are pluThe Jewish people were expected to observe strict rules about the Sabbath. They accused the Disciples of breaking the Sabbath when they picked a little grain in a field – they rubbed it together in their hands and then ate it one Sabbath day when they were hungry. Jesus told their accusers that the Sabbath was made for man, and not man made for the Sabbath.

Later, Jesus healed a man whose hand was deformed on a Sabbath in the synagogue. Again, the religious leaders were critical of Jesus. But Jesus said it was better to do good on the Sabbath than to do evil, implying it would have been evil to ignore this man’s problem based on the rule about the Sabbath. At this point, the religious leaders started looking for a way to kill Jesus.

Jesus rejected rules that were blindly followed for rules’ sake. The Sabboth was established by God to help man, not to cause hardship. Are the rules we live by so rigid that they sometimes prevent us from doing good for someone in need? Perhaps you have experienced a time when you got in trouble for being late to an important event, but the reason you were late was that you stopped along the way to help an accident victim or for some other valid interruption.

Let us remember the reasons for the rules we follow and pray for discernment before we choose to break them. There are times when we choose to break rules that we end up wrecking our lives in the process. Always pray first and listen for God’s answer. Don’t settle for less.

Mark 2:23-3:6

New Living Translation (NLT)

A Discussion about the Sabbath

23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. 24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

25 Jesus said to them,“Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?26 He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then Jesus said to them,“The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

3 Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand. 2 Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.

3 Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” 4 Then he turned to his critics and asked,“Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.

5 He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.”So the man held out his hand, and it was restored! 6 At once the Pharisees went away and met with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.

Jesus cared about sinners – Mark 2:13-17

Bible Bites 4 Teens Posted on March 14, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 15, 2014

Jesus calls Levi (Matthew) the tax collector - byJesus invited Levi (also known as Matthew), a tax collector to follow him and become one of his disciples. Levi immediately left his tax booth to follow Jesus. He also invited his tax collector friends to come to his home for a dinner.

Tax collectors were among the most despised sinners, but Jesus reached out to them and other sinners as well. The religious leaders criticized Jesus for this, but he answered them saying he came to save sinners who recognized their sins, not people who didn’t think they needed to be saved.

Do you recognize your sins? I remember a time when I thought I was “good.” I couldn’t understand that all people sinned, especially me. But when my eyes were opened to the holiness that he desired, it wasn’t hard to see how self-centered and sinful I was. Aspire to see yourself through Jesus’ eyes, confess your sins, accept his forgiveness, and to live by his teachings. You will find find eternal life and joy through your relationship with Jesus.

Mark 2:13-17

New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)

13 Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth.“Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.

15 Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) 16 But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees[a] saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?[b]”

17 When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Jesus forgives sins – Mark 2:1-12

Bible Bites 4 Teens Posted on March 13, 2014 by Janice D. GreenMarch 11, 2014

Jesus addressing the paralytic let down through tJesus went to his home town, and because the word had gotten out about his healing miracles, people flocked to see him. There were so many visitors at the place where Jesus was staying that four faithful friends of a paralyzed man made a hole in the roof of the house and lowered him down to Jesus using ropes tied to the paralytic’s mat. Jesus praised the men for their faith. But instead of healing the man right away, he simply told him that his sins were forgiven.

That upset many onlookers. Only God could forgive sins, they said. So Jesus told the man to get up and walk to make the point that he was the “Son of Man” (Messiah), the one who had been prophesied in the Bible.

Jesus was concerned with healing the whole person, not just people’s physical infirmities. Let us seek his spiritual healing as well as physical healing.

Mark 2:1-12

New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

2 When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, 3 four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 4 They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”

6 But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, 7 “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

8 Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? 9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? 10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man[a] has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

12 And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
